Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Practitioner Teaching Fellow Initiative

The University of Denver Sturm College of Law proudly announces the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Practitioner Teaching Fellow Initiative. Fellows Carl Charles and John Mathews join Denver Law for the spring 2021 semester. Both will deliver keynote presentations to the law school community and host advising sessions with Denver Law students. Developed by the DU Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, this new initiative is the first of its kind in the nation and provides unique opportunities for students at the University of Denver.
 
John Mathews received his JD from Harvard Law School in 2007. He is the Director of Community Engagement at Justice Collaborative and serves as the Senior Legal Counsel. He teaches “Mass Incarceration, Policing and Systemic Racism.”

Carl Charles is an alumnus of the Sturm College of Law, earning his JD in 2014, and is a staff attorney at Lambda Legal. He teaches “Gender Identity and the Law.”

The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Practitioner Teaching Fellow Initiative provides compelling engagement with the greater DU community. Mathews delivers his keynote presentation, “Race, Politics, & Mass Incarceration,” on March 3 and Charles’ keynote on March 31 focuses on “Gender Identity and the Law.” CLE credit is available for attendees.

“I am thrilled that these two esteemed practitioners will bring their lived and professional experience to our community,” said Alexi Freeman, associate dean of diversity, equity and inclusion. “We hope this initiative will continue each semester and look forward to continuing to elevate critical perspectives.”
