Denver Law 3L Runner Up in The Closer Competition

Third year law student, Megan Sugrue, finished as runner up Baylor Law’s The Closer competition held remotely January 13 – 16, 2022.

Megan received the problem Friday morning, where she was appointed to act as the lawyer for a student athlete who was securing his first endorsement deal under the new name, image, and likeness (NIL) rules. With only 24 hours to prepare, she spent all day Friday reviewing the endorsement contract to understand the issues and concerns for her client, interviewing the client, and preparing to compete in  four negotiation rounds with the lawyer representing the donut shop offering the endorsement deal on Saturday. Megan was one of four student participants selected to advance to the Sunday final rounds, two students who represented the athlete and two who represented the donut shop. In a tight competition, Megan was named the runner up as the lawyer representing the athlete.

The Closer competition is a national invitational transactional law competition developed and hosted by Baylor University Law School open only to law schools whose programming demonstrates a commitment to excellence in practical transactional law training. The competition is designed to provide students with a unique environment to demonstrate their transactional law skills. Unlike many other competitions, The Closer requires student competitors to face one another individually in the negotiation rounds. Competitors are judged by practicing transactional lawyers on the basis of presence, knowledge, and efficacy. The Closer provides an opportunity for students to understand the practice of being a future deal lawyer.
